Our next book club, which will take place the evening of September 26th, will be on Held by Canadian poet Anne Michaels. Longlisted for this year's Booker Prize, the novel is as dreamy and atmospheric as it is poignant and eloquent. Set over several decades, Michaels works her magic in the novel by paring back her prose and showing the reader a series of snapshots in lives of her characters. The effect, when combined with her luminous poetic skill, is to both dazzle and befuddle. Still, there is a concrete narrative that keeps the pages turning, and Michaels has an uncanny ability to produce these gems of sentences that will keep you wanting more.<br />

This is a fragment from an open letter that Michelle McNamara, an amateur sleuth, wrote to the Golden State Killer, a fugitive from justice who terrorized California from 1976 to 1986. Sadly, after dedicating her whole life to tracking him down, she passed away before he was finally nabbed. No matter. She never cared about the glory–she just wanted the case solved, regardless of who solved it. So, on August 29th we will join her hunt, and read the book that played a definitive role in the Golden State Killer’s capture.<br />
